Abstract

The attitude which is formed in the teenager years may have an influence throughout their lives as it is shaped during a time when the viewpoint of morals and values changes as intellect, emotion and sociality develop. At this, the researcher carried out this study in order to investigate the attitudes about disabled subjects on first grade students of middle schools who newly began adolesence, and to find out its effect by conducting a education program for the disabled. This study subjects one class of M middle school and one class of S middle school which are located in G city from June 13 to July 4 in 2002 as a quasi-experimental study. In order to investigate the general characteristics of the subjects, the questionnaires (which had been used for the National Survey of Public Opinion by the " Central Council for Practicing the Disabled-First Plan in 1999") were revised and complemented. For the measurement of attitudes, the instrument of DFS (Disability Factor Scale), which Lee, Jong-nam (1994), Seoh, Dong-myeong (1999) and others who had researched with them, was used by revising and complementing it to fit this study. To the control group, no education was given, while to the experimental group, the necessary four series of educational programs were carried out for fifty minutes each time a week, over four weeks. Then the latter was conducted to find out the degree of attitudinal changes about disabled people by using the same questionnaires. The result was compared wiÇØ. that of the pretest and the findings were analyzed. The collected data was analyzed by means of frequency and percentage, test, and t-test using SPSS 10.0. As a result, in terms of the degree of attitudinal changes about the disabled, the results of the experimental group that received education about the disabled appeared significantly higher statistically than the control group (p= .009). It was proved that the education program for the disabled which was used in this study was effective for middle school students' attitudinal changes about the disabled. Therefore, in view of this result, in order to establish a positive view about the disabled for the general public, it was considered that developing various education programs suitable for each subject was necessary not only for middle school students, but also for high school and college students, and the general public as well, from now on.
